We provide specialist dental care for children and adults whose treatment needs cannot be met within a General Dental Practice. The majority of our patients have physical, sensory, intellectual, mental, medical, emotional or social impairment, or often a combination of these factors.

About the service
We are the Worcestershire Community Dental Service. We help people who cannot go to a normal dentist . You need a referral to use our service. We provide specialist dental services to:
- Children and adults with disabilities
- People with health problems
- People who are very worried about the dentist
- People who cannot leave home or live in care
Treatment may include:
- Special care dentistry f or people with extra needs
- Paediatric dentistry f or children, including sedation and hospital care
- Sedation and general anaesthetic f or people who need extra help
- Home visits for people who cannot come to a clinic
- Tooth health education including t eaching how to look after teeth
To make the service fully accessible, our facilities include:
- Home visits
- Wheelchair accessible clinics, including:
- Hoists
- Specialist dental chair for wheelchair users
- Loop systems
- Interpreting services
Our team is made up of professionals including:
- Dentists
- Dental nurses
- Consultants (specialist dentists)
- Oral health educators
- Admin staff (appointments and referrals)
We also work with schools, hospitals, carers, and social workers.

How to access the service
We do not accept referrals directly from patients or their families. But professionals, like general dentists and GPs can refer you to our service.
Referral information for professionals
- General dental practitioners — via Rego only.
- General medical practitioners and other health or social care professionals must complete our community dental referral form.
For general dental practitioners, please submit your referral via REGO including any relevant medical history, mobility requirements such as hoist or wheelchair tipper and copies of radiographs. Please inform us if the patient requires an interpreter.
- Please read the paediatric referral criteria for guidance.
- Community dental referral form – non-general dental practitioners.
- If a patient requires a domiciliary (home) visit, please complete the domiciliary community dental referral form.
- Adults with extra needs, please complete the specialist dental care for adults referral form.
Your referral may be rejected if there is insufficient information.
Completed referral forms should be returned to: whcnhs.communitydental@nhs.net.
